Advice for submitting

This page compiles some tips on how to make your submissions better.

  1. Find the rough start of the segue to the segment you want to create. You must include the segue or transition.
  2. When there is a visible transition and a small margin of error, don’t try to get it right with play/pause. Pause the video and use the <, and >. keys to move frame-by-frame. Segments should start before the visual change (or a little earlier if needed for audio) and end on the first frame after the segment. It's best to start it at the earliest point that doesn't include content to account for any lag in skipping.
  3. Find the end of the segment and do the same thing as with the start of the segment, but place the end on the first frame after the end of whatever you are skipping.
  4. Preview the segment to make sure it skips seamlessly. You should not have any frame flashes, audio blips, or cut words. If you do, adjust the timings and preview again.
  5. If you have multiple segments next to each other, make sure their ends overlap slightly. This should happen by default if you followed the steps above.

User interface

SponsorBlock's user interface and its functions are explained in Creating_segments.

It is also good to be familiar with YouTube's native keybinds. The ones most relevant for SponsorBlock are the <, and >. keys to move backward/forward one frame while paused, along with the left and right arrow keys to move backwards/forwards 5 seconds, the J and L keys to move backward/forward 10 seconds, and K to pause the video.

Clean cuts

When there is a visible transition and a small margin of error, don’t try to get it right with play/pause. Pause the video and use the <, and >. keys to move frame-by-frame. Segments should start before the visual change (or a little earlier if needed for audio) and end on the first frame after the segment. It's best to start it at the earliest point that doesn't include content to account for any lag in skipping.

Essentials only

Make sure not to include any content that should not be included in the segment. Use Inspect to check that the segment does not start too early. The end of a segment should be placed on the first frame after whatever you are trying to skip. Use Preview to make sure you do not cut anything off. This is especially important for  “non-music” segments, where it is easy to accidentally cut into a fade-out.

Overlap adjacent segments

Segments of different categories that are right next to each other should slightly overlap. The reason for this is that every segment should be correct and seamless on its own and make sense from a perspective of a user with only one category enabled. If you follow the advice in the clean cuts section to start a segment before a visual change and end on the first frame of the section after, then you will naturally end up with the necessary overlap. Segments that end and begin at the same time will skip fine when all are auto-skipped together, but one of the two segments might not skip smoothly on its own.

Don't submit each segment individually

If you are creating multiple segments, submit all segments at once after you have figured out all of the timings.

Working around incorrect segments

If you come across an incorrect segment and want to submit your own to correct it, instead of simply downvoting it, you can click the pencil icon pencil icon and then use Copy and downvote to copy the timings into your segment editing menu.

Activate all categories

A segment might have already been submitted as another category. Seeing this is a reminder to make sure you did indeed choose the correct category.

Music videos

Increase your volume or boost your audio with a browser extension to cut fade-outs. The video can only be cut at the video's framerate, but music can be cut more precisely. Set the video speed to 25% and adjust the times that appear after pressing Edit in the popup, to achieve more precise cuts.

Don't create segments during a livestream or premiere. The video's duration will change after it ends, resulting in incorrect segments.

After a livestream or premiere ends, it enters a mode called “post-live manifestless” while YouTube processes it. Do not submit segments while the video is in “post-live manifestless” mode. During this time, it appears to be a regular video, but the duration will still change after it finishes processing, which takes several minutes depending on the length of the stream. You can check for this by right-clicking the video, opening “Stats for nerds”, and looking for the line Live mode: Post-live, manifestless.

Sometimes, even a regular video's length may change, since YouTube has a feature for channels to cut out sections of an uploaded video. SponsorBlock segments are automatically deleted after the length of a video changes, but the check is only triggered when a segment is voted on or when a new submission is made. If you notice a video where this was the case, vote on a segment or create a segment and delete it to trigger this process.

Use transcript to find sponsors

This shows where to open a YouTube video's transcript

A quick way to find a sponsor is to look for it in the description, then open the video transcript and press Ctrl + F and search for the sponsor. You can find the transcript button at the bottom of the video description. This also works for other keywords like "subscribe," "bell," or "like button".

Technical limitations

Vanced always skips later than the actual start time of a segment for battery saving reasons.

Fade transitions

For transitions that fade to/from black, it can be helpful to temporarily increasing your gamma to help you see exactly when the transition starts/ends. For Nvidia users, open Nvidia Control Panel > Display > Adjust desktop color settings. For AMD users, open Catalyst Control Center > Desktop Management > Desktop Color. Alternatively, on Windows, search for "dccw" in the start menu to open Display Color Calibration. Create a shortcut for "dccw.exe" for easier access.
