- Preview as skip to see if there is a clean cut between the start of the mute and the end of the mute, being careful for cuts mid-audio effect or dialogue
- Make sure that other audio in the middle of the segment is not muted
- Leave in as much non-segment audio as possible while still preserving context and segues
- Try to reduce confusion as to why a segment was muted
- Exclude segues or transitions if possible
- If the section can start skipped then muted, make two consecutive segments for the skip and then the mute
